Here's a useful chronology of our leaders' public statements while the abuse at Abu Ghraib was occurring. From Electrolite.

Repeat after me: The cover-up is [politically] worse than the crime. In this instance, I'm not sure that aphorism holds up without the parenthetical phrase.

I am staggered by the fact that they are treating this as business as usual. This adds an element to their fuck-ups that hasn't been there before: a KINKY SEX PICTURE angle.

The media will now be all over that-- to the exclusion of everything else. The Bushmen have to do something BIG-- sacrificing Rummy will probably do-- and yet, they INSIST that everyone will blame some poor moron from the West Virginia panhandle.

I assume Bush's popularity in Texas will go from 85 up to 90% for this. But everywhere else...

They're loving this in the freeper areas. The comments in A Small Victory's posts about it have been frightening; Michele tried to say this wasn't as bad as Clinton and the blue dress, if you can believe it. Something about that staining the national character more than this.
