Confusion

"One voter in five said moral values were the most important issue driving the vote, and almost eight out of 10 backed Bush."

How is it "moral" to spend the country into bankruptcy? How is it "moral" to invade a country which was no threat to us, based on lies deliberately trumped up to fit an agenda thought up by a think tank? How is it "moral" to sell out the nation's public lands to private industry? How is it "moral" to turn a blind eye to science, demanding ideological purity over empirical fact?

I don't understand my country anymore.

Update: The Left Coaster may understand it better than I do.

You're right...no sense was made yesterday.

I think for most of us (that voted for Bush), we're looking at the spending (which went largely to the war on terror and education) as a necessary evil - we're placing priority on the result the spending will bring us rather than the bottom line.

We believe Iraq was a threat and part of a bigger plan of the war on terror. Those of us that don't know what we think, are giving Bush the benefit of the doubt.

Additionally, there are several key issues in play here. 1) The assault by the left on conservative values, 2) Gay marriage and 3) Abortion. What makes all of this even more pressing, are the Supreme Court nominations coming up - that have the ability to affect the next several generations.

Josh, the spending went to tax cuts for people who didn't spend their gains. That's why the economy is still down.

I'm not aware of "assaulting" conservative values. If you mean a strict constructionist view of the Constitution which says there will be no establishment of religion, then I'm guilty.

I fail to understand why one couple's marriage is threatened by another couple's. That argument is completely irrational.

Abortion is something we'll never even come close to agreeing on, so I'll just restate my view: it should be safe, legal, and rare.

I wasn't really asking for a converation on it. You just said that you don't understand your country anymore, so I was trying to fill you in on one guy's viewpoint.

Why in the hell do people always want to argue with me?

Grins. Call it a reaffirmation of my own beliefs to myself, then.

Are saying that even with my input you still have absolutely no understanding? ;)

I don't blame you. It's so hard to find common ground sometimes between two starkly different life views.

Read 'Don't Think of an Elephant: Know Your Values and Frame the Debate--The Essential Guide for Progressives' by George Lakoff. Explains it all:
