SWM Seeks TV

Anybody bought a new television lately? I'm looking for a 27" to 30" screen. It has to fit on a stand which currently holds the (dying) 27" goggle-box. Since the FCC says everything has to be transmitted digitally by 2006, I suppose I want something that's at least "HDTV Ready," but maybe not. It has to have at least two sets of A/V RCA jacks. Magnavox is selling one that incorporates DVD and VHS players, but I'm not sure about buying one like that; if one of those players fails, then the whole thing would be out of commission while repairs are made. Who's had a recent experience in the electronics shop?

Hello again,

Well, actually yes. Had to purchase a new TV and ended up getting an LCD - HDTV ready one. I have a feeling that the prices have come down already even though it has only been about five months since I got this one. Probably could get a much bigger screen for the same price now (paid about $850 for a 17" screen! But the picture is great and am spoiled. Good luck in your search - there are just too many features to make a quick decision and nothing is a simple process any more.

I'm seeing 27" screens for as low as $250 after rebates; if it's HDTV-Ready the price seems to be $500 or so (these are not the LCD flat-panels...they're the 15" deep variety. The LCD flat screens seem to be in the $850++ range, as you say).

A big, flat screen TV would have sufficed except for the fact that they are just too heavy to move anywhere. The lightweight LCDs are so handy and easy to carry. Probably could pick it up with one finger...well maybe not one finger. It is just nice to know that it can be moved easily without any major bodily injuries. Do you have a Best Buy store near you?

If you have a Costco or Sam's Club over there I'd take a long look...

I buy for my company's remote sites and I'm getting some darned big TVs with AV inputs for decent prices. I'd also delegate the 'moving parts' to exterior components.

Best Buy has been negotiating a location for about three years (ok, maybe a slight exaggeration), but anyway they're not open yet. Sam's and Costco, yes. The prices I cited come from Sears and Circuit City.

Yeah, Dan, I feel the same way about those slots, as long as it's got the requisite A/V plugs for the components.

Cathode-ray tube TVs are bound to be phased out in a year or two, going the same way that cassette tapes did in the face of CDs. At that point the price of LCD panels will drop. But if you're still planning to buy a TV now, TV with vacuum tube-screens is not the way to go. It's been predicted that store's will only stock thin panel TV screens in the near future for storage and shipping advantages besides the new technology that it offers.
