Paper or plastic? I'm an old foof.

News Item:

A total of 44.5 billion electronic payment transactions crossed the wires in 2003, compared with 36.7 billion check payments. Those numbers marked a turnabout from 2000, when Americans wrote 41.9 billion checks, and electronic payments clocked in at 30.6 billion, the Fed said.

Once again I'm swimming against the tide. I may own a debit card, but I've never used it in my life. I've made a few bill payments through my bank's automated service, and I have a few things automatically deducted from my bank account, but I still write 6-10 checks a month. I don't even have a particularly good reason; it's probably just inertia that keeps me writing them.

Which side of the trend are you on?

I (well, we) safely straddle the debit/check fence. Most of my personal purchases (I think Scott's are, too) are debit card (unless I want to write a check at the grocery store for cash over the amount). But, I (we) write most of our household bills in checks. So, I put my left foot in; I put my left foot out ...

I use the debit (ATM card, I mean, not a Visa debit, which I don't have) wherever I can -- Longs, commissary, Wal-Mart, Home Despot, Office Despot, the AMR shoppette. I'm more likely to shop somewhere that offers swipeability.

I don't have checks, since I can't handle that kind of responsibility ;) ... so for the few things I have that need to be paid in something other than cash (my preferred mode of money-blowing), I get money orders or cashier's checks.

With my newly minted credit card, I've just been asking the bank, as I cash my paychecks, to throw part of it into the Visa account, since it's all at the same place.

I'm with you...I write checks for everything and don't even know my pin number for my check card. I'm so in for it when they stop taking checks.

Recently received a small charge card to attach to the key chain ( my little Discover card companion) -and it is so handy to use at the grocery store among other places. Instead of having to get out out the check book, etc. one swipe is so much faster...of course when the bill comes due each month it must be paid off in full or that convenience could soon become a real "interest" disaster.

I use checks once a week for daycare. The rest of the time, I used the debit card. I rarely, if ever, carry cash. About 50 percent of our monthly bills are done by electronic withdrawals, but Hub still spends two nights a month on the floor with the bills spread out around him -- yes, there are THAT many :( -- and the checkbook.

Debit card. Somehow that causes less cash to be carried in the pocket. I am only assessed a $3.50 monthly service fee. With no transaction fee per item purchased, at least for my side, don't know about the merchants' side. Not a bad deal. Merchants get their money immediately when I check my account's website. Debit cards reduce the overall paperwork for everyone involved, and perhaps the savings on labor costs might be passed on to the consumers. Probably saves in sum a whole forest too : ).

Debit cards and online banking are the bestest things since sliced bread!

I use both! I refuse to do electronic bill payments that cost money. I have a handful of creditors on Paypal, I write checks for house payment, electric, water, and I use the debit card A LOT at stores for groceries, gas, bath and beauty products from Le Boutique Target. The debit card however has ruined my system in Quicken and I've never recovered.

I pay anything I can by internet. And those are the bills more likely to be paid on time, that's for sure. haha.
That said, I have no credit cards. And I don't actually have a lot of bills. (No mortgage, no car loan, etc.)

Debit card for everything cash/purchase related. Automatic electronic payments for all bills. Most bill notices and transaction confirmations by email. My finances are almost totally electronic these days. The only times I use checks are when kids come to the door selling stuff for schools or clubs. It has simplified my life tremendously.

Debit & online bill payment is my life. I carry little cash during the week and only write out about 2-3 checks a month to creditors that don't have the electronic payment option (but I expect even them to offer the option soon). Everything else is paid online. I was never a fan of check writing so I gave it up as soon as I could. What surprises me is the amount of people who still write checks for purchases.
