Slack Key Guitar Volume 2

slackkeyalbum.jpg

That's the cover for the first-ever Hawaiian music Grammy winner. It was somewhat of a surprise, since it's A) a compilation and B) instrumental. Out here it was surprising given that the competition was so well known and so well thought of. I don't think anyone's complaining much, though; it's taken twenty years to get Hawaiian music into the Grammies at all.

Is this part of the project that George Winston is involved in?

It's sort of peripheral to all the work that Winston has been doing at Dancing Cat.

He credits pianist George Winston, who, through his Dancing Cat record label, has produced more than 30 solo guitar recordings of other slack-key musicians, including the late Sonny Chillingworth, Ray Kane, Keola Beamer, Ledward Kaapana, Cyril Pahinui, Leonard Kwan, Ozzie Kotani, Moses Kahumoku, George Kuo, James "Bla" Pahinui, Dennis Kamakahai, George Kahumoku Jr. and Cindy Combs.

I am amused by that Hawaiian TV Clown "Dog the Bounty Hunter." I can't explain the fascination. It is strange, indeed.

The background music for the show often consists of Hawaiian-language rap music. Some of it is quite good! I can't find this music anywhere.

Any ideas?
