War of the Worlds

Roxanne of Rox Populi has compiled a wondrous set of links pertaining to HG Wells' classic novel, none of which have anything to do with Tom Cruise or Katie Holmes.

I used to have a copy of the Mercury Theatre script; it was used as a text in a Social Psychology course I took. Among those links is a Real Audio recording of the show. The one you really should click if you don't visit any of the others is the one to cover art for all the various printings, from 1898 to present.

Back in college, a friend of mine produced a radio version of War of the Worlds that he adapted from Welles' script. He had the Martians landing just outside of out town. It was a lot of fun to do. I did 15 voices! But it was also terrible. Really, really, really bad. We didn't know it until we listened to the tape afterwards. Gave me a whole new respect for the art of radio drama.

That must have been fun to do.

Welles was a voice on one of the old ones (The Shadow, maybe?) so he knew how to get the effect he wanted, I guess.
