This Old House

Ah, the joys of a 36-year-old house. Both sets of faucets in the upstairs bathroom are starting to leak, and they're both more or less frozen in place. Anticipating that I may break the entire mechanism when I try to remove them, I just went looking for replacements at Home Depot and the local hardware place. Trouble is, they're 8-inch centers, and that's currently out of fashion, it seems; most of the new faucets are the 4-inch center variety. The few 8-inchers are pretty old-fashioned and ugly (and pricey, since they're relatively rare). Pfui.

Try a re-sale builders supply. Back in MI we had a few Habitat for Humanity stores - in Portland I found a great place called the Re-building Center. Look in the phone book under building supplies then look for sub-heading used. I would think you'd be able to find one in a mid-size to large city. Those kind of places usually have new and used. If it's used and cheap buy it and rebuild it.(change seals and the like) The 8" centers at Home Depot suck, you can't easily repair them and for what they cost you should be able to. Another thing you might try is looking up Granger on line - they have an exaustive catalog and while their not cheep they are reasonable. If your near a midrange to large city they will probably have a store - they don't carry everything at there stores but it's cheaper than home delivery.
