Rose Bowl politics

Will Texas dethrone USC as national champs? Will Traveller outdo Bevo? Will the blue state overcome the red state? Will the Republicans succeed in convincing the media that the Abramoff scandal isn't part of the party's modus operandi? Will Democrats get off their knees and begin throwing C-bombs (for corruption) at the Republicans? Will the media forget its fixation with "he said/she-said" articles and report honestly about bribery at the highest levels of the US government?

Fortunately, around 11:30pm EST there should be an answer to the first three questions.

I'm pickin' SC by a touchdown. Reggie Bush runs for 150 yards, Vince Young gets about 35 yards on the ground and 200 in the air but is intercepted twice, and Leinart throws for 250 yards himself.

Update: Ok, I was wrong. Vince Young is one amazing quarterback, but there sure were a bunch of missed tackles allowing him to move down the field.

Nonetheless, that was one heck of a football game.

Charlie Gibson (GMA) said it was one of the best games he has ever seen.
I missed the whole game and watched Project Runway and Seinfeld...

Vince Young is one of the best running backs ever to line up under center.

I heard Mike Golic talking on ESPN radio the other day, and he summed up my problem with Young perfectly. He pointed out that while Young's amazing athleticism certainly presents problems and unique challenges for a defense, the trouble with guys like him is that at the first sign of trouble, they trust their legs more than their arms to get them out of trouble.

There's no standing in the pocket to take the hit in order to make the throw to the open man, there's no attempting to make the play happen with the #2 or #3 receiver. If there's any complication at all, he'll run. And eventually, NFL offenses don't work when they're basically one guy trying to win games by himself instead of involving the whole team and executing the offensive scheme.

He contrasted running QBs like VY or Mike Vick with guys who *could* run, like John Elway, but whose instinct when a play broke down was to try and find another way to make the pass work, before running as a last resort. As Golic put it, "you KNEW Elway could beat you with both his arm and his legs. But how is the defense supposed to be afraid of a guy's arm when he doesn't even fully trust it himself?"

VY will go to the NFL, and he'll have a moderate amount of success simply due to his amazing athleticism. But let me be the first to say it (or among the first anyway): Vince Young will never win a Super Bowl. He won't even get to one. That is, unless he changes his current style and learns to be a *quarterback* instead of just being the best athlete on the field.

Cunningham and Culpepper are two more examples of what you're talking about, Curmudgeon.

Another thing about this type of QB; the injury risk is so much higher that their careers are likely to be brutish and short.
