Take me to your bandleader

What would you tell an alien from the planet Z9R2K if he/she/it asked you what pieces of music he should listen to if he wanted to learn about American culture?

I'd start with Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land," add Aaron Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" followed by "Appalachian Spring" or "Rodeo," Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue," George M. Cohan's "Yankee Doodle Dandy," and Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues."

What would you say?

Idea borrowed from Tart at Shakespeare's Sister.

I'd probably toss in Bill Monroe's Blue Moon of Kentucky.

From your list I would go with Guthrie first followed closely by George M. Cohan (I love the movie, but I haven't seen it in a long time. I'll bet Amazon could hook me up thought.) I have to say that I would throw Pete Seegar somewhere in there.

I'd probably add something by Chuck Berry (maybe "Johnny B. Goode"), something by Bob Dylan (picking one is harder to do though), and maybe "Born to Run" by Springsteen.
