Colbert at W.H. Press dinner

In case you missed it, here's a link to video of Stephen Colbert's performance at the White House Correspondents Dinner last night. He took no prisoners. From Editor and Publisher:

Colbert, who spoke in the guise of his talk show character, who ostensibly supports the president strongly, urged the Bush to ignore his low approval ratings, saying they were based on reality, “and reality has a well-known liberal bias.”

He attacked those in the press who claim that the shake-up at the White House was merely re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. "This administration is soaring, not sinking," he said. "They are re-arranging the deck chairs--on the Hindenburg."

Colbert told Bush he could end the problem of protests by retired generals by refusing to let them retire. He compared Bush to Rocky Balboa in the "Rocky" movies, always getting punched in the face—"and Apollo Creed is everything else in the world."

Turning to the war, he declared, "I believe that the government that governs best is a government that governs least, and by these standards we have set up a fabulous government in Iraq."

It has to be seen to be believed. There wasn't a single unskewered institution in that room. The media got hammered and Bush got hammered, deservedly so in my view. Watch it.

It seems that the President was familiar with and approved of Colbert's routine before the event, and even rehearsed with him.

ooops I was thinking of Bush look-alike Steve Bridges.

I watched the clip and it seemed that the audience loved Bush/Bush a lot better than Colbert.

I was struck by the large gaps of silence following many of his punchlines. Perhaps the audience wanted a night of comedy too.

Hey pixel righty, did you pay attention to who the audience was? It was the media lapdogs who have enabled this idiot in chief. They weren't laughing because they were getting blasted as bad as the president.

Their Laughter for the president on the otherhand seemed quite obligatory. Guess they didn't want to screw up access to the next press briefings.

This will go down as one of the best performances of comedic satire in history.

Tucked away in his address to the dinner's flabbergasted attendees, like a ticking time bomb, there was an "easter egg", which we had absolutely . . . here "we" is a polite nod . . . NO right to expect. Like the Easter Bunny in a mischievous mood, Mr Colbert camouflaged a bon mot, so profound as to approach philosophical.

oh, before I reveal Mr Colbert's casual accomplishment, I should like to preface with a cave-- . . . "
