Er, should this be circulating?

I was early on in reading this, and I needed to go back to the list of Dramatis personae. I happened to see the frontispiece.

It reads:
To Aiea Library --
Have a nice Doomsday --

Neil Gaiman

I have no way of verifying the signature, but I have no reason to doubt that it's authentic, either. I wonder how our small-town library acquired this, and I wonder even more why it's in circulation.

I would think not, but then, I am a Gaiman fan. It does happen that on occasion libraries get a copy signed when an author is in town. Occasionaly a library employee might take a copy from the library to a signing. The local library in my home town has a pretty good selection of signed editions but they do not circulate them. I think most libraries save donated signed editions but I don't imagine they usually set aside copies taken out to be signed - usually they don't notice, at least not right away.

I'd take it back and let them know that they need to take it out of circulation.

Oh, I'll let 'em know. This copy is in crummy condition, though. Some of its pages are coming loose from the spine, and it shows signs of hard use.

I was astonished to see that autograph, that's for sure.
