Tired, I am

I'm instituting a new rule for myself:

If you expect to be useful the following day, do not start a 400-page book at 11:30p.m. If it's any good at all you're liable to be up till 2:00a.m. or later, and the dog wants breakfast at 7:15.

All right. You mention a book like that, you are required to share title and author. :))

It's almost embarrassing. I got sucked into Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb's "In Death" series a while back, and then I thought, has Roberts written anything else as good? So I've been trying some of her other books, and I like some of those. She writes appealing characters. This one in particular was Three Fates, which is a kind of caper novel about recovering/stealing little statuettes of the mythological Three Fates, one of which was supposedly lost on the Lusitania.

One thing I've decided is that Roberts really hit her stride about 1998. The earlier stuff (and I've only tried one or two) doesn't appeal to me at all. Long about 1998, though, she hit the big time with hardcovers and she hasn't looked back. The newer books have reasonably good plots and people the reader can recognize.
