Random baseball observances

I really wish the TV people hadn't persuaded MLB that it was a fun idea to do mid-game interviews with managers or coaches from the dugouts.

Has anyone else noticed that the only series in which "God Bless America" is performed during the seventh-inning stretch is this Cleveland-Yankees one, and then only at Yankee Stadium? I'm tired of this six-year-old "tradition".

I really hate the faux-bugle calls at Yankee Stadium. I have since 1977.

And I'm not scared of the Indians.

Peter Tork was scheduled to sing "God Bless America" during the seventh-inning stretch at one of the playoff games in Philadelphia, and he sang it, as far as I know.

As to the teams that remain alive, with apologies to my friends in Massachusetts, I am thinking of declaring the Indians the new America's team.

And is Manny Ramirez the worst defensive leftfielder ever?

That's just Manny being Manny. ;)

I gotta stick with the NL West, and I think I'm leaning toward the Rockies, just because they came out of nowhere. The Dodgers have never worried about them, but we've warily watched the D-Backs for several years now.

Criminy, but I hate those in-game interviews, too. I would love to see some deadpan player or coach sneak something outrageous past one of the dopey interviewers. Eventually, coaches will learn to play the game and give the bland, standardized crap that passes for access these days.

The Diamondbacks are a good story, too, coming back from the depth of a couple of years back.

The Red Sox are a relatively unobnoxious team, yet they are the most obnoxious of the remaining four. This could be the most unobnoxious set of championship-series contestants in my adult life.
