Old foof music-fest

From Rhino Records, here's a new 4-CD boxed set entitled "Love is the Song We Sing: San Francisco Nuggets 1965-1970." The CDs are contained within a 120-page hardbound book with rare photos and essays.

There are some big hits here, but there are a lot of songs from bands which never made it outside of the Bay Area, too. Amazon has a full track list. Ed Ward reviewed it for "Fresh Air."

For flavor, here are some of the bands on Disc One:

  • Dino Valenti (pre-Quicksilver)
  • Country Joe & the Fish
  • We Five
  • Quicksilver Messenger Service
  • The Beau Brummels
  • The Warlocks (precursor to the Grateful Dead)
  • The Great Society (from which came Grace Slick)

Disc Three includes material from:

  • Moby Grape
  • Big Brother & the Holding Company
  • Blue Cheer
  • Sly and the Family Stone
  • Jefferson Airplane

Looks like a winner to me.
