This seems a little soon

I replaced four incandescent bulbs in the main bath with CFLs in March of 2007. Yesterday one of them stopped working.

Update: And tonight another one quit!

I thought these things were supposed to last five years.

Yeah, and then you cannot just chuck them in the trash. They have to be disposed of properly. And properly in my town is a twice a year collection at one of the high schools, where they are now charging $10 per car for whatever you drop off. I have this to drop off.......4 small batteries and two of those lightbulbs. Seems hardly worth it. SO, my alternative is to keep them in a box or bag in the garage until next spring to see if I have more.:(

Is the $10 a real fee or is it actually a fundraiser for the school?

We're not really up to speed on recycling out here. Only parts of Oahu have gotten separate waste bins for green stuff and garbage (my neighborhood hasn't yet). I don't think there's a provision for things as small as bulbs right now.

A real fee, not for the schools. If it were, I would be more inclined.

Yes, I wondered about recycling there this summer. I guess I never thought much about it before this year. Our friends in Lanikai have garbage pick up twice a week which is pretty good but no recycling. I realize it is a lot more problematic on an island, but wish they would do something about it!

Well, as you might imagine, there's no welcome for any new landfills anywhere, and the garbage-to-energy program only produces a small percentage of our electricity requirement (at least 90% of electricity comes from burning oil, which is why our last bill for two people was $400).

We need to work harder at it.
