What he said

TBogg:

I'm in my fifties and I never thought that I would see an African-American elected President of the United States in my lifetime. I just didn't think we had it in us but it appears that we have most assuredly come a long way.

Looks like TBogg and I are of an age. I was living in the DC suburbs when the March on Washington took place; my parents attended but didn't take me along. If you'd told me then that a black man would not only run a credible campaign for President but be on the cusp of winning the election, I'd have said "No way."

I'm very glad to have been wrong.

Willie Brown, the retired California pol who is largely responsible for term limits in California (they were passed to get him out of office), now has a weekly column in the San Francisco Chronicle. The Sunday before election, he commented that Barack Obama is the Jackie Robinson of politics. Jackie Robinson didn't get to play major league ball because he was black; he played the majors because he was a brilliant ball player. Barack Obama is where he is because he's a brilliant politician; his race is irrelevant except to a few (I hope, few) bigots.
