Alas, alack and crap

As my friend N points out in the comments below, his Phillies beat my Dodgers yesterday to win the NLCS 4 games to 1. There's any number of reasons why, but the number of walks and hit batsmen the Dodgers' pitchers issued in front of guys who then hit the ball out of the park was a big one. The Dodgers' ERA was 7.38, meaning they allowed 7+ runs per nine innings. The Phillies' ERA was 3.01 per nine innings. That doesn't cut it.

Composite Box Score

Good luck to the Phillies; I hope they beat the Yankees (assuming the Angels don't come back and win three straight in the ALCS).

You, sir, are gracious in defeat.

I'm still finding it difficult to comprehend that the Phils are actually a good team. We longtime phans don't know how to deal with such counter-experience happenings.

I live in Phillies territory, so by geography, I am a phan.

I sympathise with your disappointment.

On the bright side, you can now clear your mind of distractions and focus on the only real sport - SEC football. I'm told ESPN has a whole network dedicated to this passtime.

(As an aside, the Kid had to wear a sports themed outfit to school one day. I don't have much, but managed to locate an Auburn t-shirt. She insisted all the way to school that no one plays sports in Auburn, it's just where her grandparents live. I find that both highly amusing, and proof that I have my parenting priorities straight.

I did convince her that saying "War Eagle! Go Tigers!" would take care of any questions. My mental image of those exchanges amuses me as well.)

Juli, I hope she doesn't say "Roll Tide" by mistake!

Her aunt and uncle would disown her!!

There is one guy* at the school who was wearing a University of Alabama sweatshirt for a while. I told LiJun to waggle her thumb at him and yell "Fear the Thumb!"** and I am 100% confident that neither of them had a clue what that was about.***

*I have no idea what his formal title is, but he supervises drop-off and pick-up and possibly lunch-time and recess. You know, one of those guys who's always around.

** She goes to a Mandarin immersion school, so she actually said something like "Kong3 ju4 mu3 zhi3!" But the principle is sound.

***It's a chant from the year Auburn beat Bama for the fifth time in a row, requiring a thumb to count consecutive victories. Now you, too, can taunt benighted Bama fans.
