Request Absolution

A portion of my green waste spilled out of its recycling bin when the robot truck came by to pick it up this morning. I quickly ran out and picked up the overflow, scurried across the street, and put the offending branch into my neighbor's bin before the truck came back down that side of the street.

Where does Miss Manners stand on these sorts of issues?

Miss Manners approves.

It's way cool for several reasons:

1) It keeps the neighborhood clean & tidy. And puts "waste in its place" sooner rather than later.

2) Since in Hawaii we aren't charged for trash pickups per bin (instead, we pay for them out of our taxes), it's not like you are being a free-rider by using your neighbor's bin. BTW, this was always an issue when I lived in San Francisco, where we were allowed but one can per week or we'd have to pay extra. There, running down the street to throw your extra trash in someone else's half-full can was considered bad manners.

3) It's Hawaii! The Aloha Spirit extends into the world of opala -- taking care of the aina is a good thing!

Anyway, I wish we had those green-waste bins down in my neighborhood. I think I'll be filling at least 12 big lawn bags with leaves from the mango tree tomorrow. Ah, to have one of those big bins to fill up instead! (And part of my neighbors' if I have too much!)

Usually 2/3 of mine is mango leaves too.

I felt like a burglar. Looking around furtively, ensuring I wasn't seen. It was funny.

If you were living in our neighborhood, you certainly could put the extra in our bin. Our cul-de-sac has shared our green capacity when needed. One neighbor is a little sensitive about his regular garbage can, but he has a couple of little kids, so that family has a lot of regular garbage. Green cans and recyclables, no problem.

That was a good thing you did. And if I see Miss Manners, I'll let her know.
