Got a gat?

If you're a detective fiction fan, check out The Thrilling Detective. It's a huge site dedicated to the P.I., the private dick, the op, the shamus. The owner publishes an e-zine (haphazardly, it seems); the most current issue is here.

It's got great bibliographical and biographical material on many of the most famous detectives ever to grace the printed page, many of them in the pulps. Be sure to check out the alpha lists and the ever-evolving definition of a private eye.

Yeah, and I hesitated to just because of people like you, Eric. ;)

Aloha, bonjour and all that...

Yeah, the dick jokes have been done to death (mostly by those "hard up" for wit), but thanks for the mention of my "haphazard" Thrilling Detective Web Site. If any of your readers know of any Hawaiian gumshoes I've missed, tell 'em to drop me a line. I hardly ever bite.

And here's a question. I was never that big a fan, and Lord knows I'm about as non-Hawaiian as you can get (native or otherwise) but even so, didn't the cast of MAGNUM P.I. seem a little, uh, white to you guys? Except for the obligatory shots of palm trees and beaches and Thomas' shirts, it coulda almost taken place in Southern California ... or Cleveland. Were there local touches I missed?

Hey, Kevin, the "haphazard" referred to the newsletter/e-zine only, not the semi-static informational pages. ;)

Yes, "Magnum" was unquestionably whiter than even "Hawaii 5-0". There were a lot of locals working behind the sets, but not so much onscreen. I don't recall that there was much fuss made about it, though. At the time the State was just thrilled to have a replacement for McGarrett and Danno.

Kinda the same thing with "Lost" now. There are several hundred local hires working for the show, but few on the screen. 'Course, the show doesn't intend to be Hawai'i, unlike the other two.

I really enjoyed your site, and I'm sure I'll be back to it.
