Good grief

In the game of extravagant hype, ESPN has somehow managed to exceed that of the Bush Administration.

Yesterday on SportsCenter the network put up a trailer under a discussion of this weekend's Michigan - Notre Dame game. What did that trailer say, o trenchant observer of idiocy? I'm glad you asked.

"The Most Important Game Between Unranked Teams in College Football History."

Wow.

You're suprised at hype from the network that named Michael Jordan the greatest athlete of the twentieth century?

Actually, that tag line is a brilliant piece of irresponsible post-modern irony that tries, in the manner of such things, to have it both ways. It can appeal to people who believe it, and if anyone complains, ESPN can say, "Sure, it was over the top, but can't you take a joke?"

You might be right. ESPN does occasionally have the self-knowledge to poke fun at itself; see the SportsCenter promos, for example.

I suppose I'm not a big fan of ironic self-mocking whose goal is commercial promotion of the annoying qualities that are being made fun of. I'm a post-modern curmudgeon, I suppose.
